“Throughout the variation of mediums and processes within my practice, photography acts as the backbone, with everything else relating to it in some way. Acting as a continuous line, other mediums such as painting, printing, sculpture, and artist books, then bounce back and forth, with photography as the connection and mediator. With this exhibition, my intention is to blur this line and bring the mediums and processes closer together as one, despite their physical differences. Photography as painting as print as sculpture. The multiple dissolved into a unique object, as a nod to the singular moment in which the image within portrays, and a nod across to Antonin Artaud’s insistence that everything is the same.” - Kingsley Ifill

Published on the occasion of his solo exhibition at Eighteen Gallery, Copenhagen 2023.

"Keunyser" [koe'nI'zEr], m. – the Cornish term for a 'fuel gatherer' – Seacoal emerges from the ocean, unintentionally ensnared by trawling fishermen and delivered ashore. This material encapsulates contradictions, once a driving force propelling the progression of human civilisation, coal now casts a shadow over the very systems it once fuelled. The work is an act of labour, meticulously charting marks on paper through repetitive motions that evolve into a ritualistic performance. The coal is rolled, pushed, pulled, and rubbed, tracing the material's path of inevitable decay. Once revered, these coal relics now stand as silent witnesses to the complexities of progress and the delicate equilibrium needed to preserve our world.

“Seacoal in the Southwest of England typically originates from wrecked ships that were carrying coal as fuel. However, its significance extends beyond industry. It has ancient traditions associated with it, where it adorned fishing boats and was believed to bestow ancestral wisdom and good fortune. In Thomas Nicols’ ‘Lapidary’ or ‘The History of Precious Stones,’ coal was even described as an amulet against evil spirits. There are accounts of finding several pieces of coal placed under the floorboards of a house, suggesting a belief in its protective qualities. These anecdotes amplify the intricate web of belief and tradition woven around Seacoal’s enigmatic properties.”

The photographs were taken in the suburbs of Lisbon and in the island of Santiago, Cape Verde, between 2017 and 2019. Vitalina Varela – Caderno de Rodagem is a visual record of Pedro Costa´s working methods. A collective effort.

Vitalina Varela had spent all her life working the land in the mountains of the Island of Santiago, Cape Verde. She was the youngest of eight brothers and sisters and she married her first love, Joaquim, a boy from the same village, of Figueira das Naus.

Conceived as a "bio-monograph", this catalogue offers a unique insight into the life and work of the French artist, sculptor and ceramist Valentine Schlegel. It features a large iconography, archives, and texts by sculptor and Schlegel specialist Hélène Bertin.

Rather than providing a literal narrative, organic abstraction eschews representation in favour of expressing something more intuitive and visceral. Organic modernism is concerned with interlocking functions such as symmetry, line and curve, forming a sense of elegance. Valentine Schlegel's architectural design and sculptures are characterised by the modernist engagement in forms and materials. The artist’s stylistic inclinations, which focused on artisanal, rough-hewn dimensions, accompany our practice as we return to architecture, sculpture and design in search of visual provocation.

Photographer Imogen Cunningham was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1883, when the fight for equal rights for women—legally, politically, economically, and socially—was gaining ground in the U.S. Cunningham’s career and life story offers a glimpse into what it was like to be a woman artist at that time.

The book Flora showcases her intellectual and expressive approach to nature as an art, which was a central theme throughout her career. The artist’s approach to structure, light and detail contributed to the formation of the avant-garde approach of photography and design.

Tina Modotti’s life and artistic career were framed by historical events and her constant double commitment: artist-photographer and revolutionary-anti-fascist militant.

Almost all her photographic work was produced between 1923 - 1930 in Mexico. Modotti evolved from an interest in abstract forms to a gaze centered on the human form and denouncing inequality and injustice. This book, Tina Modotti’s most extensive to date, is the result of extensive research. The artist’s monograph combines her documentary, natural and avant-garde perspectives, founding a unique insight into Latin America through the 20th Century.
